In 1948, Zhengzhou Municipal Junior Normal School and Zhengzhou Municipal Provisional Normal School were established. In 1949, it was merged and renamed Henan Provincial Zhengzhou Normal School. In 1953, it was changed to Henan Province Zhengzhou Normal School. In 1978, Zhengzhou Normal College was established on the basis of the junior college classes of Zhengzhou Normal School. In 1982, Zhengzhou Normal College was closed and Henan University of Finance and Economics was established on this basis. In 1993, obtained a master's degree. In 2010, it merged with Henan Political and Legal Management Cadre College to form Henan University of Finance, Economics and Law. In 2024, obtain a doctoral degree. Currently, it is a provincial institution and has the qualification to be exempted.
It currently has three campuses: Zhengdong Campus, Wenbei Campus and Wennan Campus, covering an area of more than 2,000 acres. It has 2 first-level doctoral programs and 12 first-level master’s programs, and has 21 second-level colleges and 65 undergraduate majors. There are currently more than 2,100 faculty members, including more than 800 with senior professional titles and more than 1,000 with doctoral degrees. In 2025, there will be 7,645 undergraduate enrollment nationwide and 6,929 local undergraduate enrollment in Henan.

Philosophy, theoretical economics, applied economics, law, Marxist theory, geography, systems science, urban and rural planning, and agricultural and forestry economic management are provincial key disciplines, and international business is a key discipline of the school. It is one of the earliest financial and investment talent training bases in Henan Province. The Auditing School and Ernst & Young jointly cultivate talents and is the first discipline inspection and supervision school in Henan Province.
