The Executive Management Committee (Gecex) of the Brazilian Foreign Trade Commission (Camex) approved the implementation of import tariff exemption measures for more than 1,000 products on February 12.

This time, a total of 1,059 imported products were approved to implement "temporary tariff reductions" (ex-tarifário) – this mechanism is applicable to products that are not produced in Brazil of the same type and can temporarily reduce or exempt import tax rates. Among them: 421 items involve capital goods and information technology equipment; 638 items are auto parts products;

The committee said the move aims to expand the scale of foreign investment and reduce Brazil's domestic industrial costs by allowing duty-free imports of machinery, equipment and parts that lack similar products in the country.

In addition to the above-mentioned temporary tax reductions, Gecex has also decided to implement a zero-tariff policy on 20 types of industrial and agricultural inputs and two types of end products. Relevant exemptions cover many fields such as medical care, energy, home appliances, automobiles, and animal feed.

Anti-dumping measures were introduced simultaneously

At the same meeting, the Commission also approved the implementation of three new anti-dumping measures to protect domestic industries from what are considered “unfair imports.”

Among them, in the field of medical devices, it was decided to impose anti-dumping duties on disposable injection needles originating in China for a period of five years. In the steel industry, Gecex has also adopted anti-dumping measures against cold-rolled flat steel products and coated flat steel products from China.

The Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC) has not announced the specific list of imported products involving zero tariffs and the details of anti-dumping measures. It only stated that the relevant content will be officially disclosed in the next few days after being published in Brazil's Federal Official Gazette.
