Anhui University of Finance and Economics was established with the approval of the Anhui Provincial Party Committee in May 1959, under the supervision of the Finance and Trade Department of the Provincial Party Committee. It was originally named Anhui University of Finance and Trade. At that time, the school was located at the former site of the Banking School outside Nanmenwai, Hefei City (now the West Campus of the East Campus of the University of Science and Technology of China). The school had 800 students. In 1961, it moved to Jiaotong Road, Bengbu City (now the site of the old campus).
