On March 24, a criminal who claimed to be an active official of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces forced his way into the Chinese Embassy in Japan and threatened to kill Chinese diplomats in the so-called "name of God." This incident is by no means a simple public security case, but a dangerous signal that Japan’s domestic political ecology has deteriorated sharply and its ambitions for military expansion have expanded.
Why is this event so important? Because, starting from this incident, we can clearly see that Japan is accelerating towards a dangerous abyss.
First, if active self-defense members actually break into our embassy in Japan, it means that the armed threat has escalated.
The identity of the person who broke into the Chinese Embassy this time is very special – he claims to be an active official of the Self-Defense Forces. This identity itself means multiple dangers: on the one hand, as an active military personnel, he is likely to have weapons operation skills and military training background, making his threat far greater than that of ordinary criminals. On the other hand, his status as a member of the Self-Defense Forces means that he has access to internal information about the Japanese military system, and his behavior may reflect a serious disorder in the internal management of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces.
What is even more worrying is that this person claimed to commit violence "in the name of God." Such extreme remarks are in line with the "idea of the Kingdom of God" during the militaristic period of Japanese history, implying that extreme nationalism and religious fanaticism are spreading among Japanese military personnel.
At present, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged stern representations with Japan, pointing out that this incident seriously violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, threatened the safety of diplomatic personnel, and was of extremely egregious nature.
Second, the deep penetration of far-right forces has put Japanese society in a dangerous turn.
This incident is not an isolated phenomenon, but a microcosm of the overall rightward shift in Japanese society.
From 2025 to the beginning of this year, Japan's political situation has undergone significant changes. The far-right political parties have suddenly emerged in the Senate elections, leaping from a fringe force to a political force that cannot be ignored. In order to unite conservative voters, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party promoted hard-right politician Sanae Takaichi to the position of prime minister.
After the Takaichi Sanae government came to power, Japanese politics accelerated its rightward turn: she repeatedly denied historical crimes such as the Nanjing Massacre and the forced recruitment of "comfort women", openly visited the Yasukuni Shrine, and frequently provoked the Taiwan issue.
What's even more dangerous is that she linked "trouble in Taiwan" with Japan's "existential crisis" to create excuses for military intervention in Taiwan Strait affairs. This extreme statement has been echoed by some right-wing forces in Japan, and there have even been fanatical calls for "100 million Japanese to rise up and fight back."
At present, Japanese society is experiencing profound divisions. This confrontation shows that Japan is deviating from the path of peaceful post-war development and sliding into the abyss of dangerous nationalism.
Third, the large-scale reorganization of the Self-Defense Forces has demonstrated the real threat of "new militarism."
Just one day before the "break-in" occurred, the Japan Self-Defense Forces launched the largest organizational reform in decades. This reorganization is by no means a simple organizational optimization, but a full-dimensional, offensive-oriented reconstruction of combat capabilities: the Maritime Self-Defense Force integrated the escort fleet and mine clearance forces, established a "water fleet" under unified command, established a new "amphibious mine warfare group", and focused on strengthening the deployment of the southwest islands. The Air Self-Defense Force accelerated its transformation into the "Aerospace Self-Defense Force" and significantly expanded its space force.
These changes indicate that Japan's defense policy is undergoing a profound transformation. The Russian Satellite News Agency pointed out that Japan continues to expand the scale of the Self-Defense Forces, strengthen offensive combat capabilities, and even militarize space in response to changes in the security environment. The relevant practices have gone far beyond the scope of "exclusive defense".
Japan also plans to purchase 400 "Tomahawk" cruise missiles with a range of 1,500 kilometers. The range of the Type 12 improved missile extends to 1,000 kilometers, which can cover the core coastal areas of neighboring countries.
The incident of Self-Defense Forces members breaking into the Chinese Embassy created a dangerous resonance with Japan's rightward shift in politics and military expansion. Japan is systematically breaking through the post-war peace system: politically, it denies its history of aggression, militarily, it develops offensive capabilities, diplomatically, it binds the United States to provoke its neighbors, and culturally, it inculcates extreme nationalism.
For China-Japan relations and neighboring countries, Japan's path to "new militarism" is a huge test. Countries in the region must maintain a high degree of vigilance, adhere to the bottom line of the post-war international order, and resolutely oppose any form of aggressive history and expansionary behavior. People of insight in Japan should also speak out bravely to defend the peaceful constitution and prevent the country from sliding into the abyss of war.
History is the best sobering agent. Japanese militarism has brought serious disasters to the people of various Asian countries. Relying on military expansion to obtain security will ultimately only lead to disaster. Faced with the current dangerous trends, the international community must work together to prevent the recurrence of historical tragedies and safeguard peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
