Survey Report on Employment Directions of English Major Students Part 1

Regarding the employment direction of English majors and society’s demand for English majors School of Foreign Languages English 10-3 201010011068 Sun Ying

As China joins the WTO, more and more Chinese products and Chinese culture have entered the world. At the same time, more and more foreign products and culture have entered China. Language plays an important role in such interactions. It is not difficult to find that a large number of English majors have emerged in the society, and for a long time, the English major has been a very popular major and has been sought after by countless Chinese students. Now, because too many people are involved in the English industry, a large number of English graduates are difficult to find jobs. I conducted a corresponding survey on the employment direction of English majors and the society's demand for English majors. I got a preliminary understanding of some trends, and I hope to have a correct grasp of this so that I can better cope with future work and employment. In particular, the world has made us understand to a greater extent the vital importance of human resources in an enterprise. This also puts forward high international requirements for the further development of the job market.

First of all, let me state what I know about the employment directions of English majors. Mainly include international trade direction, tourism direction and teaching direction. Among them, the international trade direction provides occupations such as international trade business personnel, business translators, and business assistants. The tourism direction mainly involves positions such as English-speaking tour guides, reception and management personnel of foreign-related hotels, senior clerks of foreign companies, and general administrators of export-oriented companies. For teachers, teachers in kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, and vocational high schools are all optional. In response to such a topic, I designed a set of questionnaires. After conducting surveys within a certain range, I came to some conclusions.

As English majors, a large proportion of people feel that the status of English in society is not that important anymore because too many people know English. English has therefore become a disadvantaged major. There are only a small number of people who think English is important. They think it is important to learn English well. Most people believe that the current demand for English in the talent market is the comprehensive ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Second only to comprehensive ability is good oral English. A few people think that reading and writing, sending and receiving emails, and 25% of them think that translation, including written and oral, is very necessary. 80% of students believe that the industry in need of English talents is the foreign trade industry, followed by hotels and tourism. If we talk about using English, which is more often translated, 70% of people agree, and 10% completely agree. Of course, there are also a few who disagree. When students are looking for translation companies, many people attach great importance to quality, and good quality is the first priority. Of course, many people also attach importance to speed and convenience. Being easy to find and fast is also a major advantage. With the recent years

With the progress and development of society, especially the increasing internationalization of coastal cities and large cities, large enterprises and foreign-funded enterprises have increasingly become the employment targets for graduates. Especially in international metropolises such as Beijing Tuhai, companies have to come into contact with English documents, materials, and information on a large number of occasions during their work, as well as have direct business contact with foreign parties. Some companies even require the use of English directly in the company's daily documents. Therefore, today's high-level companies actually have very high requirements for English proficiency, especially the practical application level of English.

To a certain extent, the examination of English proficiency will generally become an important indicator for employers to measure students' proficiency. For most positions, English is no longer a professional skill, but a necessary professional quality. It is naturally widely adopted by companies as a recruitment inspection item. At the same time, from the perspective of the meaning of English itself, it has been generally recognized that English is a basic professional quality and ability.

Most students believe that there is an oversupply of English talents in the current talent market. Almost no one thinks that supply exceeds demand and is in short supply. Some people think that not many meet the requirements. 50% of people's salary expectations for their first job are between 1,500 yuan and 2,000 yuan. Next is 2,000 to 2,500 yuan, and almost no one expects it to be less than 1,000 yuan. Some people think it will be 2,000 yuan or more. After graduation, most people still tend to work in foreign-funded enterprises, and not many want to find employment in small and medium-sized famous enterprises. It is understandable that most people choose a career based on salary and benefits. Some people choose hobbies, followed by social needs and popular trends. Many students believe that employers care most about the comprehensive ability and development ability of graduates, followed by professional performance and social experience. Of course, many students also think that the school's reputation is the most important factor. Nowadays, it is common for majors to be mismatched, so many students think that it will cause certain difficulties in finding a job, but they can still be overcome. Generally, college students' employment knowledge mainly comes from online and school employment guidance, followed by newspapers, magazines and training institutions. Regarding the majors studied by individuals, many people think it has a promising future, a few think it is very promising, and some people think it has no future or have not thought about it at all. At present, there are more than 300 million people studying English (professional and non-professional) in my country, accounting for about 1/4 of the country's total population. Experts predict that in a few years, the number of people learning English in my country will exceed the total population of English-speaking countries. Such a large number of people are learning English, but what is their actual application level? According to a survey by the State Administration of Foreign Languages, there is still a serious shortage of high-end foreign language talents engaged in simultaneous interpretation and written translation in my country, and the gap of high-quality talents who are qualified for Chinese and foreign translation work is as high as 90%. Most people think that the phenomenon of doing research in every possible way is an investment behavior, while a few people think it is a boring consumption. The most common problem that troubles people when applying for jobs is lack of ability. Few people think that the school's employment guidance is insufficient. Most people have not thought about the positions they are qualified for, and they all think that things will work out as soon as they arrive. About 80% of students attach great importance to studying professional courses in college, while a few only want to be average or passable. It can be seen that the learning atmosphere is still very strong.

The level of a person's English proficiency depends on his ability and strength, as well as the actual contribution he makes to society. Therefore, our English majors must work harder to improve their own quality to adapt to the needs of society. There are many people learning foreign languages, but there is still a shortage of translators. Therefore, we have more reasons to pay attention to the subject of English and improve our own standards. With society providing so many opportunities, we must work harder to improve our English and contribute to society.

Survey Report on Employment Directions of English Major Students Part 2

1. Purpose of investigation

With the rapid development of our country's economy, our country's employment situation is very severe. The contradiction between labor supply and demand has long existed, and the total pressure is huge. It is no longer an alarmist statement that college students will be unemployed after graduation. The employment problem of college students has been a very prominent social problem in recent years, and it is becoming more and more serious. As junior students, we are approaching graduation and will be under tremendous employment pressure. In order to correctly analyze the current employment situation in our country, clarify the employment direction and prospects of my major, have a positive mental state and mental outlook, and find scientific solutions, I took the task assigned by the teacher and conducted a market survey on the employment prospects of the normal English major. The following are my survey results and analysis.

2. Investigation objects

I used weekends and National Day holidays to conduct interviews and surveys with several middle school teachers and newly employed college graduates in Xiamen. I also surveyed some graduating seniors in our campus and library.

3. Survey research methods

Interview surveys, questionnaires, collecting employment information

4. Investigation results and analysis

In the "20xx Employment Report for Chinese College Students", the English major was included in the "Red Card Warning Major" for undergraduate employment in 20xx. English majors, because they have no other professional knowledge, seem to have become an embarrassing group of people in the employment army. They don’t know where to go in the vast sea of people. It can be said that at present, the entire social development situation has undergone great changes. English has become a tool that more and more people can use freely. With China's opening up, English education has gradually become more popular, and the environment for learning English is also improving. Many entrepreneurs or managers already have this skill and no longer need a specialized English talent to help them. In this case, the demand for people who purely learn English is greatly reduced. At the same time, the English proficiency of non-English major students continues to improve and they have become a strong opponent of English major students. Indeed, except for occupations such as teachers, full-time translators, and language researchers, for most jobs, English is only a necessary auxiliary tool, not a work technology. Therefore, English major graduates will face greater employment pressure. Regarding the employment prospects of English majors in normal schools, the following are some interview records:

A teacher from Xiamen University analyzed: "Although the teacher-training major has a narrow employment profile, it belongs to the entire education system and is relatively stable. There is still a big gap for English teachers in small and medium-sized cities and rural areas in my country, so the teacher-training English major will become a popular major for employment. She It is also said that what our country is currently in short supply is not people who can speak or understand a few foreign languages, but relatively advanced English talents. For students who are purely English majors, they should develop in a more professional direction on the basis of expanding their horizons to enhance their professional competitiveness. "

Huang xx, another ordinary middle school teacher, said: "Although many students majoring in English have passed the fourth and eighth junior college, their actual ability is low and it is difficult to express accurately in English when communicating; normal students even lack the experience and ability to stand on the podium and teach. During college, they only developed the ability to take exams but lack the ability to apply English and practice. How competitive can such students be after graduation?"

A senior male majoring in English at the normal school in our school confided in his speech: "Besides taking the postgraduate entrance examination, I don't know what to do!" When talking about the employment situation after graduation, he shook his head and sighed, "Just take it one step at a time and forget it!"

Li Ting is my neighbor. She graduated from Zhangzhou Normal University with a major in English and now runs a clothing store. Recalling the dilemma of sending out resumes when she just graduated from school a year ago, she was filled with emotion: "I wanted to find a job in a private company at the beginning, but when I asked, they didn't want people who knew only English. Some required a marketing qualification certificate, and some required a degree in economics. In short, you can't get in with just an eighth-level professional certificate. Therefore, it is difficult for English majors to find jobs across majors, unless they have a certain economic background, run a small store, and start their own business."

In addition to the interview survey, I also sent out 50 questionnaires in the school. The content of the survey was: "What are the employment directions for English majors in normal schools?" After analysis of the survey results, as long as there are these directions that are more suitable and can put what they have learned into practice:

(1) Pass the unified teacher recruitment examination and interview to become a teacher;

(2) Working as a teacher in a private school or tutoring training institution;

(3) Entering foreign trade and foreign enterprises;

(4) Engage in translation work;

(5) Study abroad, etc.

5. Conclusions and suggestions

Although the current employment situation for college students is quite severe, with teacher positions in big cities becoming increasingly saturated and oversupplied. However, due to the adjustment of my country's education policy, a large number of private schools and vocational schools have emerged in recent years, which has increased employment opportunities for normal students and broadened the job market for graduates within the education system. What cannot be ignored is that my country’s central and western regions are facing a shortage of high-quality teachers and a lack of staff in the grassroots education system. In the past two or three years, provincial capital cities in the central and western regions and some second- and even third-tier cities in economically developed regions have become hot spots for teacher graduates to find jobs.

Under this circumstance, the most important thing for students majoring in English in normal schools is to lay a solid foundation in language. Only by truly learning English well and mastering it can they be able to talk about employment and even future development. Only by practicing the basic skills well can you master the practical application ability on this basis. While giving full play to your professional advantages, you should also give full play to your enterprising spirit, learn professional knowledge, integrate into the industry culture, and become an elite English talent in the industry. Through your own efforts, you will have a better tomorrow.

Survey Report on Employment Directions of English Major Students Part 3

At the request of the school, during the summer vacation of 20xx, a survey was conducted on the demand for English majors in enterprises in the hometown. We are required to give full play to our professional advantages, combine professional characteristics, and carry out a survey on social English major needs in our hometown city in response to the current trend of social demand for English talents. The following is the content of this activity:

1. Bring a letter of introduction to office buildings, major enterprises, etc. to participate in the practice in the form of questionnaire surveys, and conduct in-depth investigations into the current market demand for English talents, and survey at least 8 units;

2. Through questionnaire surveys and on-site inspections, prepare a summary list of English major positions required by each unit;

3. Explain the current situation of corporate English talent demand by analyzing social survey data and the connections between the data, put forward reasonable suggestions, and form a personal survey report.

social survey analysis

Most of the companies I investigated were in the manufacturing industry, mainly because my hometown is also a hometown of machinery manufacturing. Moreover, they are all small and medium-sized enterprises with small scale. Compared with large enterprises, the division of labor is not detailed enough and the requirements for employees are relatively low. The companies surveyed also provide different positions to English major graduates, including copywriting, management, sales, etc. jobs. In addition, because the division of labor in the enterprise is not detailed, there are cases where employees wear multiple hats, so it is difficult to define the employee’s exact position. The tasks are clear but there is no professional title. This can also be seen as a sign that an enterprise is not formal enough. The key factors that companies consider when recruiting English professionals are work experience and practical ability. Six of the eight companies focused on practical capabilities. This is mainly because recruiters also understand that lack of experience is a common phenomenon for fresh graduates, so they pay more attention to students' ability to put what they have learned into practice, as well as their hands-on ability and enthusiasm for work, in order to observe whether the students' abilities have a lot of room for improvement, whether they have training value, whether they are credible and usable, etc.

Regarding the company's enrollment numbers and starting salaries for English majors, both are relatively low. The average number of students enrolled is less than 5, and the starting salary is around 1,500. On the one hand, this is due to local restrictions. Because the local economic development level and consumption level are relatively low; on the other hand, because English major graduates are not important enough to local enterprises.

The certificates that companies give priority to when selecting employees are Cambridge Business English certificates and other skill certificates such as customs declaration and accounting certificates, which fully illustrates that companies pay more attention to other related professional knowledge in addition to English proficiency in recruitment.

As for the foreign language proficiency most lacking among college graduates, all surveyed companies pointed out that it is the lack of oral expression ability in foreign languages. This fully exposes the shortcomings of exam-oriented education. Of course, it is also related to the language environment. Students do not often speak and practice for a long time, and their reading and writing skills are far worse than their listening and speaking skills. In real life, listening and speaking skills are much more useful than reading and writing. This issue is something that current students must pay attention to.

Regarding other skill requirements for English majors from many units, they chose word processing ability, public relations ability, financial expertise and planning ability (in order from most to least).

Regarding the abilities that English graduates need to improve most after entering the workplace, 5 companies chose business practical abilities, and others include daily communication skills and language application abilities.

Regarding the situation of English talents in the talent market, they mostly believe that there are not many English talents who meet the requirements, and the ability and quality of today's graduates are not as good as before. At work, they hope that employees can be innovative and perfect. And almost all of them expressed their willingness to accept paid internships from students.

In addition to English language courses, they believe that the courses most needed for English majors are applied courses, such as international business law, e-commerce, communication etiquette, business planning, business negotiation, foreign trade correspondence writing, computer applications, etc. In addition, three companies have chosen business English skills courses, such as business English reading, business English listening and speaking, business English writing, business English translation, etc.

Survey analysis summary

From the above analysis, it can be seen that the demand for English majors in this region is not large. In addition, if English major graduates want to find a place in the workplace, English proficiency alone is not enough. They must have sufficient business knowledge and other skills. It can be seen that business English needs to have greater market competitiveness. Business English Employment Prospects

After joining the WTO, economic globalization and market internationalization have further deepened, and all fields are inseparable from English talents. In particular, there is a shortage of comprehensive talents who understand business trade, marketing, economic management, and are proficient in English. Business English talents have become backbone talents and general talents in various industries and fields.

At present, English has become the de facto international language. Many countries and regions have designated English as the official language of communication. English has become an important communication tool in world-wide international conferences, forums and academic seminars, in international business negotiations and international business contract texts, and in working in foreign-funded enterprises or joint ventures. With the rapid development of world economic integration, especially after my country's accession to the WTO and the approach of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, my country has become more widely integrated into the international community. Exchanges with countries around the world in the fields of politics, economy, culture and other fields have become increasingly frequent. Industries related to English majors, such as foreign trade, diplomacy, customs, tourism, management and other foreign-related work departments, have received unprecedented development opportunities, which has led to an increasing demand for English talents in my country.

At the same time, it is worth mentioning that the above situation has also led to more and more people speaking English. Being able to communicate fluently with foreigners is no longer something to be proud of for English majors. This undoubtedly puts pressure on English majors. If you want to find a place in the workplace, you must have a higher level of English. In addition, you must have extensive business knowledge, communication skills, etc. In recent years, the expansion of enrollment in major colleges and universities has also increased the pressure of market competition. In addition, more and more graduates from other majors are joining this ranks, which invisibly creates greater employment pressure for English major graduates.

However, according to statistics from the Ministry of Labor and Personnel, the employment rate of English major graduates has always been among the top 10 in various majors. Even with the general slump in employment among college students in recent years, the employment rate of English major graduates in most colleges and universities still remains above 90%, and the employment prospects are optimistic. After graduates enter the workplace, most of them can use their foreign language advantages and are valued and welcomed by employers such as schools, foreign affairs departments, and companies.

Therefore, as China's economic development further accelerates, the connection between China and the world will also strengthen. In a relatively long period of time, English majors will continue to maintain their good employment prospects.
