According to Jiemian News, Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced on March 9, local time, that the Canadian government has completed a further review of TikTok Canada’s investment case and decided to allow the investment to continue, but TikTok must comply with a series of new legally binding commitments, including strengthening the protection of Canadian users’ personal information and minors.
The Canadian government stated that this decision will protect Canadian jobs and ensure that TikTok maintains its physical presence in Canada.
"We look forward to investing in new and returning projects to support Canada's thriving ecosystem of creators, artists and small businesses," a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement.
On January 21 this year, the Canadian Federal Court made a ruling to shelve the Canadian government’s previous order requiring TikTok to close its Canadian operations, which means that TikTok’s Canadian operations can continue to operate.
In November 2024, the Canadian government ordered the closure of TikTok's local business due to national security risks, but it did not prevent Canadians from using the short video application or creating content. TikTok responded at the time: "Closing TikTok's Canadian office will destroy hundreds of high-paying local jobs and is not in anyone's best interests. The company will challenge this order in court."
In December 2024, TikTok Canada announced that it had filed a judicial review with the Canadian Federal Court against the government’s order to close TikTok’s Canadian business. TikTok said at the time that the order would cost hundreds of dedicated local employees their jobs and livelihoods, who support TikTok’s community of more than 14 million monthly Canadian users. TikTok said it is in the best interest of Canadians to find a meaningful solution and ensure that local teams continue to exist alongside the TikTok platform.
